Socks

This morning Jett and I were playing in the kitchen. He was cruising between the cupboard and the stove. I had just pointed out how sweaty Jett's feet were - sweaty enough that the floor was getting wet and slippery - when sure enough, Jett took a tumble. He wasn't crying very hard, but I scooped him up and started to walk around when Charlie mentioned that I was bleeding. No...Jett's bleeding. All over the place.

It turned out to be just a little cut on the end of his finger (we think it was from the side of the oven. Yes, the oven was closed and off, geesh). But a few layers of skin came off and you know fingers, they bleed like crazy. We ran it under cold water, we put pressure on it, and still, the bleeding. My shirt and Jett's shirt were ruined quickly, and still, it kept bleeding. And of course Jett is crying, because he cut his finger, we held his hand under cold water, and now I'm putting pressure on it, and all he wants to do is suck it, or stick it in his ear. (Actually he did get it in his ear, which made his ear look like it was bleeding). Anyway, here is the question: what do you do with a ten month old when he's cut his finger?

It will seem like a good idea at first, but you quickly learn that you can't put a band-aid on it because he keeps putting his finger in his mouth. Some of you might think I could just hold him in my lap and make sure he doesn't stick his finger in his mouth, but that just means that you've never tried to hold Jett when he doesn't want to be held, and you've never seen how fast he can get that finger in to his mouth. And he's not going to choke on a band-aid on my watch.

Then one of you will spend 5 hours digging around under your bathroom sink looking for gauze and tape. But you can't tape gauze around his finger with more tape then he could ever chew off, because he will still put his finger in his mouth and then he'll view the gauze and the tape as a challenge to suck even harder.

You can send your husband to the store for liquid band-aids. I mean, he's already late for work at this point and you obviously can't go yourself. (And yes, the liquid band-aids were his idea in the first place). But the liquid band-aid only works if the bleeding has stopped, which it hasn't. Then, when it finally slows down and you paint the liquid band-aid on, it just peels right off. Oh, and it stings your baby, which it doesn't tell you on the package, but you figure it out when you test it on yourself.

So, what to do, what to do. I guess you just nurse your baby for like, two days straight, holding a burp cloth around his finger the whole time, and keeping his hand above his heart. Then after four days of nursing while the both of you are still covered in blood, Aunt Jenny will call and suggest a mitten. Hmmm....maybe that will work.

Nope, he pulls that right off. How about a sock? Definately a sock for each hand, so he can't pull them off.



Amazing. He wore socks on his hands all day and never complained. What a trooper.
